Italian pump manufacturer Eden is relatively unknown to most aquarists by their own name; odds are much more likely that you are familiar with their OEM products such as Eheim’s Compact NW Skimmer Pump or ZooMed’s array of small powerheads.

A few Asian skimmer companies have begun using modified Eden pumps after the release of Eheim’s Compact +NW, shown above.  Like the Laguna (Askol) line of pumps, some Eden models do not require a shaft support–meaning modifying them with enlarged volutes for increased air intake is much easier to do. Eden’s smaller models are akin to the newer AquaBee pumps that fuse the shaft and impeller, which then spin via ceramic ‘bearings’ at the shaft’s ends.

So far Skimz has gravitated towards the Eden 128 pump on their Monzter II Skimmer and we hear Bubble Pioneer skimmers will also feature this pump, although that has yet to be confirmed. My speculation on the Skimz Monzter II was off base. Slated to be released at InterZoo 2010, the skimmer is planned to feature a modified Eden 128 for 1,150 LPH of air intake at 30w. Dubai based blogger SPY recently uploaded this video which shows the Monzter II and modified Eden 128 pump in action.

I have admittedly not used an Eden pump, excluding the Eheim compact, but I have heard some very positive things. Laguna pumps are rather expensive, eating away at margins for skimmer manufacturers. I would not be surprised if the more affordable Eden line gets put to use in the very near future for skimmers. Time will tell.
