The world’s leading fair for pet supplies, Interzoo, is registering an outstanding exhibitor response: so far around 1,100 manufacturers have registered their participation. The worldwide pet supplies industry, ranging from small manufacturers right up to the global players, will present their comprehensive range of pet foods and accessories, grooming aids, garden and equestrian articles along with services from 17th to 20th May 2012. The growth in trade fair participation mainly comes from Europe, Asia and Australia.

During the World Veterinary Doctor Year, Pet South America celebrates 10 years alongside 20 thousand visitors.

The most successful and important pet market fair asserts itself through great new launchings and world trends.

The 10th edition of Pet South America, the main event for the pet and veterinary sectors in Latin America, surpassed its expectations in business terms, number of visitors and in positive results. The fair, which was held from October 18th – 20th at the Expo Center Norte, exhibited new trends and novelties for all tastes, from services to innovative products and equipment for the professionals from the sector. This year, the novelties focused on luxury, sustainability, health and technology. Products like golden shampoo, tracker and GPS, NASA-technology beds, educational toys, new diagnostic equipment, drugs, vaccines and food were a few highlights presented at Pet South America.

Alongside the fair, the Specialties Congress was held, joining CONPAVEPA (the São Paulo Congress of Small Animal Clinical Veterinarians) and CONPAVET (Congress of Veterinary Medicine of Sao Paulo), the most important technical-scientific events of the sector in Latin America. During the three days, professionals checked out 28 specialties discussed in veterinary medicine.

TOKYO (AFP) – Scientists in Japan have begun studying the “language” of oysters in an effort to find out what they are saying about their environment.

Researchers are monitoring the opening and closing of the molluscs in response to changes in seawater, such as reduced oxygen or red tide, a suffocating algal bloom, that can lead to mass die-offs.

Using a device they have nicknamed the “kai-lingual”, a play on the Japanese word “kai” or shellfish, scientists from Kagawa University want to see if they can decode oyster movements that might warn of possible problems.

The “kai-lingual” uses a series of sensors and magnets to send information on the opening and closing of shells in response to environmental changes.

The technique has never before been used on oysters farmed for food, but has been employed by pearl oyster farmers.

“With kai-lingual, we can hear the ‘screams’, like ‘we are in pain because of insufficient oxygen’,” said Tsuneo Honjo, director of the Seto Inland Sea Regional Research Center at the university.

Pearl oysters have been placed among their food-farmed cousins where they have acted as “interpreters”, alerting growers to ocean changes, he said.

“We have firmly established conversations with pearl oysters through years of research. They should translate into the reactions of the farmed oysters for us in this project,” he said.

The research started in October and will last until the harvest in March, Honjo said.

“So far, oysters are talking in a healthy fashion,” he said.

A shark that had been in captivity at Monterey Bay Aquarium died shortly after being released just days ago, the aquarium announced Wednesday.

The young great white shark, which was 4 feet 10 inches long and weighed 52 pounds, was placed back in the Pacific Ocean off Goleta on Oct. 25. A transmitter designed to be released if something happens to the shark popped free Oct. 29 and was recovered the next day; researchers determined the shark had died.

“This is a very difficult day for all of us, and for everyone who saw and cared about this animal,” said Jon Hoech, the aquarium’s director of husbandry. “Based on the shark’s behavior and condition prior to release, we had every confidence that he’d do well back in the wild. Unfortunately, that’s not how things turned out. We’re surprised and saddened by the outcome.”

It was the sixth great white kept at the aquarium, which has managed to keep sharks in captivity longer than any other institution, ranging from 11 days to more than six months. This shark was released after 55 days, during which more than 250,000 visitors came to see him.

One recent survey showed fewer than 200 adult and juvenile sharks off the Central Coast, though it is unclear how accurate that count is. The Monterey Bay Aquarium said it would review all policies and procedures following the shark’s death.
